Pay It Forward With Your Words

I think about writing this a lot and then never get around to it. Well, on this first day of summer, I'm sitting down to write some very profound words of wisdom and I'm asking you to think about them and then and go and do something with them. It's going to be amazing ... promise!

It's simply the act of giving someone a compliment. I know, it sounds scary and you might ask yourself why but when you do it, you will wonder why it took you so long.

Receiving a compliment is so nice but giving one out, in my opinion, is even nicer. It's kinda like when you were in elementary school and you got to pick a friend to sit with on the bus. It makes you happy, even giddy and you can't stop smiling and feeling good about life. It's unexpected and comes from the most genuine of places.

On a regular basis, I see some really cute women floating around Kelowna. They put some effort into their outfit and sometimes, that is really hard to do. We get so used to hanging out in the same clothes and throwing on what is most comfortable. It takes a little bit of courage to pull off something that you adore but haven't had a chance to wear.

Today would be a day I feel like I kinda stepped outside of my comfort zone. Jeans and cute tops, I have no problem with but I fell in love with a dress months ago, purchased it and then it has sat mocking me in my closet ever since. It's bold and has a very ethnic tone to it but I loved the boho inspiration and I couldn't pass it by. Today was the day I put her on and I feel really pretty in it. Exactly how I imagined I would feel.

I don't think everyone feels my sentiment on this piece but ... so what!! It's how you feel, how you carry yourself and how high you lift your head. Own your look and don't second guess it. Chances might be that you are the only one paying attention to how out of your comfort zone it might be. To everyone else, you look pretty spectacular.

I think I've just come to realize that if you just want to wear something that you adore, then you should. Why stop yourself from being amazing you! Life is short so why not be the girl you wish you were. We would love to help you get there and who knows, you might even receive a compliment.

Summer Keeps on Arriving!

Summer is officially arrived and we couldn't be happier to see the bright pops of colour! There are some seriously cute pieces that have just taken up space on our racks. Johnny Was is back for another season and the pieces are pretty and floaty and perfect paired with your favorite denim (pick a color)!

Sanctuary has some delicious linen pants and they come in two styles - crop and long. These have been super popular already and we just received a new shipment in the white and navy. Perfect for running errands and loose enough to not feel ridiculously hot.

Here are just some of the pieces in right now. Come by. We can't wait to see you.

Do The Pirate

On a recent trip back to Winnipeg, I saw one of the most beautiful girls I have ever seen. She wasn’t doing anything extraordinary but we were shopping and I’ve realized that it’s way more fun to shop looking pretty, then looking like you just fished out what was lying at the bottom of the clothes hamper.

Anyway, she was stunning. She was wearing a white button down blouse with navy high waisted pants that were ankle length. On her feet, heels (maybe a nude colour) and on her head, a beautiful navy scarf that was wrapped in a way that made me want to be her hair.

Actually, I just really wanted to be her and in that outfit!
We were a shopping entourage that day and so we did what any entourage would do! We stared! For awhile and then when I just couldn’t stand it anymore, I asked her about her scarf wrap. I am all about giving another woman a much deserved compliment. Try it ... it’s fun and honestly, who doesn’t love getting told how great they look!
This girl did not look like she was meant to be shopping in Winnipeg or any other Canadian city, she had New York written all over her and she herself, in her very stylish way, knew it.
Now, she claimed to be having a horrible hair day but I say, no way! She was meant to wear that scarf on that day and with that outfit. She was adorable and she was owning it. The funny thing is that when I asked her about her hair, we just happened to be leaning up against an assortment of patterned scarves in all shapes and sizes! Lovely. Timing couldn’t have been better.

She gave me a quick demo and I was hooked. I even bought a new scarf to try it out on my own.
Actually, I picked up a few new scarves in Winnipeg and was loving the instant pick up they gave my outfits. That day at the mall, I ended up picking up one more scarf (from a different store) and this one, I was willing to just go for it and tie it around my head. I was on holiday and for some reasons, it just feels ok to try something new and bold when you are far from home.
My outfit was simply a pair of coral jeans and a blue and white striped sweater with some booties. I was enjoying my look (even the scarf girl liked my outfit since she complimented me right back) but I wanted to own the scarf look. I was dying to try it but I was feeling intimidated. The second scarf I purchased was a smaller version from the scarf family and I tied it more like pirate style. I was loving the freedom and individuality it was bringing me as we finished up our afternoon shopping affair.
Fashion trends are funny things. I was totally loving the look and feeling like it took some extra confidence on my part to pull off the scarf that afternoon. I did it and I was enjoying it. However, when I got home that afternoon, my husband asked how shopping was but couldn’t resist making light of my scarf and the pirate effect it was having!
I’m still trying to wrap my head around it but I do know that I’m not done with it. If the pretty girl from Winnipeg can rock it, so can I and I’m up for the challenge. Who says pirates can’t be cute?!?! AAARRRRGGH!

If you want to be a pirate too or just look super cute in jeans and a tshirt with a fun printed scarf, come by the store. We just received some beauties and lots of colours.

The Mom's Movement at Fashion Week

Something pretty amazing happened at New York Fashion Week. Something so outstanding. It makes me feel giggly inside.

The first-ever "Strut: The Fashionable Mom Show" was presented with Iman and real moms of all shapes and sizes. Yup, you read it right. They worked the runway with strollers and pregnant bellies, looking chic for everything from office, to school drop-off, park play and the super fun date night. Ahh ... remember date night?!

Clothes came from top designers like Tory Burch and Michael Kors and maternity wear from Hatch and A Pea in the Pod.

The vacant model stares were not part of this show. Instead, it was smiles and high fives! People, this is my kind of fashion show. Real women in real clothes that are available in stores right this very second and that seriously work with your lifestyle. Like I said, it makes me feel giggly inside because this works and I love that a supermodel (who is a mom of two I might add) is supporting and getting behind this movement. The mom movement is what it's referred as.

Speaking as a mom and woman who has gone through this. The confidant-beautiful-being-in-a-career feeling to having children and feeling beautiful in other ways to, in the transition, losing your stye and then trying to figure out exactly where you fit in. To sum it up, it sucks and it's almost easier to not do anything about it and live in sweats and grubby tshirts.

Let me just say for the record, it's not ok and you are going to look and feel pretty again - we just might have to rejig a few things. When we do, there will be no looking back and you are going to feel amazing. This is a for sure girls.

This makes me think of something I tell my customers at Stella & Dot trunk shows when the opportunity presents itself. Plain and simple, the jewelry just makes you feel pretty. That's it!

You could have something grubby on and maybe no make up and maybe even your hair is in a ponytail but put on some cute earrings, and you my friend, feel like a million dollars. Maya Brenner, celebrity jewelry designer (can you say girl crush) talked about being in sweats with baby spit-up on her shirt but ... put on a charm necklace and voila, instantly prettier!

I loved this quote from one of the models at the fashion show. Not because it was revolutionary but it is what I hope all women can say at least once a day.

"I feel amazing," said mom model Lauren Jimeson, who is 37 weeks pregnant and strutted in a cream cocktail dress with cut-outs on the sleeves. "It's just a great message that you can be fashionable and still be a mom and still look great and feel great."
"We need stuff that's transformable and affordable, that real moms like us can wear every single day to all of the things that we have to do, whether it's the grocery store, school pickup, back to the meeting, back to school."
So ... you're a mom! Congrats but that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your cute style, lose your love of fashion and succumb to feeling like a mom. Get out there, put on your big girl denim, a clean tshirt and own it! Cute earrings won't hurt you either.

Spring Fashion is Mind Blowing.

Ok, so if you are following this blog and live in Kelowna, you probably feel like our winter has been non-existent and that perhaps, Spring has may have already sprung!

I'll be honest, I am a Fall girl at heart - I love everything about the season including (but not limited to) the colour in the leaves, when Starbucks announces that the Pumpkin Spice Latte is back, sunny and crisp days and of course, the fashion!

But .... Spring is on its way and if the calendar wasn't enough to indicate this, Stella & Dot launched their Spring/Summer 2012 collection. It's quickly becoming a favorite collection of mine (and I don't even have my samples yet).

Grab a seat and swoon over the new collection for yourself. You are going to love Spring!

Your Stocking Never Looked So Good!

It's almost here ... can you believe it! I know, me neither but in two more sleeps, the hustle and bustle of the holidays will be neatly tied up with a bow. Friends and family will be gathered and love will be all around. Very merry!

In the meantime though, there are still two very important shopping days left and we would love to help you fill those stockings (that are of course hung by the chimney with care) with all things pretty and sparkly.

First on your list should be a necklace by Gypsy Junkies. This fab line out of LA is new to FRESH and just the right amount of sparkle every girl needs this holiday. Junk Charm necklaces are so super cute and trendy right now and if you are loving this look, this is the line for you. You can customize a necklace with adorable and vintage inspired charms. I'm loving mine with just my initial and the horseshoe charm. You can add as many as you like and just make it your own to show off your fabulous personality and style.

Scarves are always a welcome addition to any stocking and to any wardrobe. Honestly, I feel like a girl can never have enough scarves. It's the easiest way to update a classic look of jeans and tshirt and add a pop of colour. There are many to choose from.

Happy shopping Girls and enjoy the last hours of magic before the big guy arrives!
